I don’t often read my bible. It’s one of those monster re-translated from original texts bibles (NLT) with all the extra interpretations, correlations with other events in history, backgrounds on authors and key people, so on and so forth. When I read it, it is generally for reference and generally the Old Testament (Deep down, I’m fairly certain I’m Jewish; just don’t tell my mom).

This evening, while keeping the baby upright for his 20 minutes so he wouldn’t puke everywhere, I took out the copy of the New Testament (KJV) that my mother gave him for Easter and began reading John.

I chose John for two reasons:

1. It is my son’s first name, and 
2. John was the disciple who wrote with the purpose of convincing scholars that Jesus was who he claimed to be, and so his book is often the book that people of intellect are directed toward to read about the life of Christ.

When I got to John 1:23, I stopped and burst into tears.

22 Then they said unto him, “Who art thou that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?”

23 [John] said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness.”

I know I misinterpreted the meaning (because after drying my tears, I looked it up in my bible to find out that it was a quote from Isaiah and that “crying” here means “heralding loudly”), but in that moment, I read it completely different because

I feel that, to varying degrees, the lot of us are “the voice of one crying.”
